Intake Manifolds

The intake manifold, or inlet manifold, is the connection between the carburetor or throttle body and the engine:

  • At the cylinder head on 4-stroke engines
  • At the cylinder or directly on the crankcase on 2-stroke engines

Many intake manifolds are made of a flexible rubber compound that dries out and becomes hard over time. The condition of the intake manifold should be checked regularly, as a cracked or porous manifold causes air leaks, making the mixture too lean. This creates a high risk of engine damage.
Some vehicle models have aluminum intake manifolds. These are mounted with gaskets that must also be in perfect condition to avoid leaks.

In general, for motocross bikes and 4-stroke maxi scooters (which are designed for high performance from the factory), it is sufficient to install an OEM quality intake manifold. Even for tuning projects, the diameter of the carburetor is rarely increased, as it is sufficient in most cases.

Which intake manifold to use?

OEM style intake manifolds for 50cc bikes, scooters, mopeds...

For those who do not want to make major changes, there are intake manifolds in OE quality for the most common models such as Yamaha Aerox and Jog, Piaggio Zip, Gilera Runner, Peugeot Speedfight and Kisbee, Beta RR 50, Derbi Senda, Rieju MRT, Piaggio Ciao and many others.

Popular brands like Motoforce offer products in good quality at fair prices.

Tuning intake manifolds

Scooters, mopeds, and 50cc bikes, as well as 2-stroke maxi scooters and classic Vespas, are not designed for high performance. Therefore, many riders tune their engine, which often involves using a larger carburetor. From a certain diameter, an intake manifold with a larger opening is required.

There are well-known brands in this field such as Barikit, Polini, Malossi, Top Performances, Voca, Stage6 or Stage6 R/T and many more.

    Note: The connection diameter is measured at the carburetor. Rubber mounts are often slightly smaller because the rubber expands during installation.
