50cc clutch – the link between engine and drivetrain

How a motorcycle clutch works

The clutch is used to disengage or engage the engine and drivetrain. When the clutch lever is pulled, the connection between the engine and gearbox is interrupted. When the clutch is released, the engine and gearbox are reconnected.

To better understand how it works, it helps to look at the individual components:

The friction plates are driven via their outer tabs by the clutch basket, which is connected to the crankshaft. The steel plates engage via their inner tabs with the clutch hub, which drives the gearbox. The steel plates have no contact with the clutch basket, and the friction plates have no direct contact with the clutch hub.

When the clutch is pulled, a mechanism moves the pressure plate. The springs are compressed and the friction plates and steel plates separate. This prevents the crankshaft from driving the gearbox.

When the clutch is released, the springs expand and press the pressure plate back onto the plates. The friction plates engage again with the steel plates and transmit power to the clutch hub, which in turn drives the gearbox.

The linings of the friction plates are therefore made of high-friction materials to ensure reliable power transmission.

Clutch and tuning

As engine performance increases, the clutch must also be upgraded. A low-quality clutch cannot reliably transmit the power. Even if it does not slip immediately, it will wear out much faster.

Tuning clutches offer various options: reinforced friction materials on the clutch plates, stiffer springs for higher pressure on the pressure plate, or complete clutch kits with a larger friction surface and increased clamping force through additional plates and springs.

Note: A comparison between different motorcycles is useful here. A 50cc geared bike usually has a small clutch with 4 or 5 friction plates and 4 springs. A 450cc bike, on the other hand, has a significantly larger clutch with 7 or 8 plates and 5 or 6 springs.

Recommendations:

Depending on the setup, it is not always necessary to replace the entire clutch.

  • Using a sport cylinder? Reinforced clutch plates and springs are recommended.
    Example → MotoForce Racing, Stage6...
  • Using a racing cylinder with significantly higher displacement? A reinforced clutch kit, possibly with more plates, is recommended.
    Example → Stage6 R/T, MVT, KRM...
  • Running a heavily tuned racing engine with a high-end cylinder? In this case, a complete clutch kit with a specific clutch bell, clutch basket, and pressure plate, as well as more plates and springs, is recommended.
Example → Top Performances TPR complete clutch kit

Note: For a stock or only derestricted engine, an OEM-quality clutch is usually sufficient, for example from MotoForce.

To ensure long service life of the clutch plates, the gearbox oil should be changed regularly according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Use high-quality gear oil.
