The carburetor is the key component of the intake system and is responsible for preparing the fuel-air mixture; it has a major impact on your motorcycle's performance and throttle response. Whether as a reliable OEM quality replacement like the Dell'Orto PHBG for standard 50cc engines, as a tuning upgrade with a Stage6 Racing or Polini CP Evolution or for optimum tuning of the existing carburetor - this guide will help you make the right choices.

Here you will find all the information you need to select, install, adjust and maintain the right carburetor: from inexpensive OEM / replica carburetors to sports and racing models for the most popular 50cc bikes: Derbi Senda 50, Rieju MRT, Sherco SM 50 / SE 50, Aprilia SX / RS 50, Yamaha DT 50, Beta RR 50, Fantic Enduro 50 and many more.

What is a carburetor and how does it work?

The carburetor generates and regulates the air-fuel mixture allowing the engine to run efficiently and smoothly.

As air flows through the carburetor, a vacuum is created that draws fuel through the jets. When you open the throttle, the slide rises, allowing more air in, while the carburetor adds more fuel. The main jet, idle jet and needle control the mixing ratio depending on the engine speed and load. The result: clean combustion, stable performance and direct throttle response.

For 50cc supermotos, which usually rev high and are also used on dirt tracks or racetracks, a high-quality, correctly tuned carburetor is crucial to ensure that you get a powerful and reliable engine that can be used over the entire RPM range.

Main carburetor components

If you want to tune the engine precisely across the entire RPM range, you should know and understand the individual components of a carburetor. Each part fulfills a specific function.

  • Float chamber and float: The float chamber stores fuel and the float keeps the level constant.
  • Jets: Meter the fuel. The main jet controls high RPMs, the idle jet controls low RPMs. The needle regulates mid-range throttle.
  • Needle: Connected to the slide valve, regulates the fuel flow in the mid throttle range.
  • Slide: Regulates the air flow depending on the throttle position. Depending on the design, there are round slide valves, flat slide valves or vacuum slide valves.
  • Choke: Helps with cold starts, either manually or automatically.

Carburetor types for 50cc motorcycles: original, sport and racing

The choice depends on the intended use, the engine setup and your personal experience. There is no "best" carburetor, but the most suitable carburetor for each application.

✅ Carburetor by intended use

ORIGINAL carburetor

Carburetors installed ex works are tuned to offer an optimum compromise between fuel consumption and reliability. Original carburetors and replica carburetors in OEM quality are the ideal replacement carburetors for 50 cc Supermotards / Enduro bikes for everyday use.

  • Diameter: 12-17.5 mm
  • Strengths: Inexpensive, durable, with road approval, low consumption, easy adjustment
  • Use: Standard engines, original components (exhaust, air filter, standard cylinders)
  • Recommended: Original carburetor, Dell'Orto PHBN/PHVA, Mikuni, Motoforce standard carburetor

SPORT carburetor

For lightly tuned engines. They improve flow and throttle response and provide noticeably improved acceleration without sacrificing reliability or increasing fuel consumption.

  • Diameter: 17.5-21 mm
  • Strengths: Better throttle response, acceleration and top speed compared to the standard carburetor
  • Use: Standard to slightly tuned (50-70 cc cylinder, performance exhaust, pod air filter)
  • Recommended: Dell'Orto PHBG 19-21, Polini CP 19-21 mm, Stage6, Motoforce Racing, Voca Racing

HIGH-PERFORMANCE carburetors: RACING & High End

For high-performance and racing setups. They supply engines with larger displacements with maximum flow and direct throttle response.

  • Diameter: 19-38 mm
  • Advantages: Maximum flow, very direct throttle response and maximum precision across the entire speed range
  • Use: Only recommended for heavily tuned engines, with racing exhaust, reed valve with carbon reeds and high-flow filters
  • Requires: Experience in carburetor tuning and professional fine tuning
  • Recommended: Keihin PWK, Dell'Orto VHST, Mikuni TM, Stage6 R/T, Polini CP Evo

⚠ IMPORTANT: Carburetors over 17.5 mm can cause problems with road approval. For road traffic, you should always check the applicable regulations.

✅ Carburetor by slide type

  • Round slide: The most common type. It moves vertically and is controlled via the throttle cable. Offers direct response, simple adjustments with needles of different tapers and high reliability. Carburetor models such as Dell'Orto PHBG and Polini CP use this system.
  • Flat slide: Shortens the intake path and improves the air flow. This ensures even more direct throttle response, more precise fuel metering and better top-end performance - ideal for sporty setups and performance-oriented engines.
  • Diaphragm carburetor (CV): The slide is not actuated directly via the throttle cable, but via a diaphragm that reacts to the vacuum generated by the engine. The carburetor automatically adjusts the mixture to the actual requirements. This ensures very smooth engine running, lower consumption and a progressive, smooth throttle response (less sporty).

Carburetor tuning for 50cc supermotos: the right balance

The performance of a 50cc motorcycle depends not only on the carburetor, but also on how all the engine components work together. Running a carburetor that is far too large on a stock engine or expecting a high-performance cylinder to develop its full potential with a carburetor and intake system that are too small are common mistakes: performance goes down and the risk of damage increases.

A few basic principles for carburetor tuning

Before you change the carburetor or install a sport/racing cylinder, you should observe a few basic compatibility principles:

  • Air flow: air filter, reed valve, intake manifold, carburetor, cylinder and exhaust form a chain. Any bottleneck has a negative impact on overall performance.
  • Balanced ROM range: Manual transmission motorcycles require a lot of gear shifting. A carburetor that is too large tends to deliver good performance in the upper RPM range, but leads to power gaps at low revs, with poor pulling power on hills or when accelerating out of bends. The choice must suit the intended use (city, roads, back roads, race track).
  • Carburetor tuning: Every change (cylinder, exhaust, air filter, reed valve) changes the air/fuel ratio. Retuning the jets, needle and air screw is not optional, but necessary to avoid piston seizure and loss of power.

In short: Only a balanced, coherent approach ensures that all components harmonize and the engine works correctly over the entire RPM range.

Carburetor adjustment and maintenance

A poorly adjusted high-end carburetor can perform worse than a correctly adjusted standard carburetor. On 50 cc geared motorcycles with high-revving engines and frequent shifting, correct adjustment is crucial to prevent piston seizure and utilize all available power.

An incorrect mixture has a direct impact on performance and reliability:

  • Mixture too rich (too much fuel): Higher consumption, bluish or whitish smoke, black and wet spark plug, loss of power at high RPMs, exhaust dripping oil.
  • Mixture too lean (too little fuel): Overheating, knocking/detonation, white or "glazed" spark plug, high risk of piston sticking, loss of power.

You check the final tuning using several indicators: spark plug color (ideally tan), engine behavior at all RPMs, fuel consumption, temperature and throttle response.

Setting the carburetor correctly - step by step

Proper tuning is crucial to achieve maximum performance without risking engine damage. Always work top-down: High RPM first, then mid RPM and finally low RPM.

  • STEP 1 → Main jet (high RPM): First install a main jet that is clearly too large, so that the engine runs too rich and starts to stutter as if you were riding with the choke pulled. Gradually select smaller main jets until the engine runs smoothly. Take a test ride after each change. If the engine drops RPM under quick throttle, the mixture is too lean. If the setting is approximately correct, drive a few hundred meters at full throttle and then switch off the engine immediately. Then check the spark plug: If it is black, the mixture is still too rich and you need a smaller jet; if it is white, the mixture is too lean and there is a risk of piston seizure; a light brown / tan color is optimal.
  • STEP 2 → Needle (mid RPM): Ride at half throttle and listen for the engine: If the engine stutters or runs erratically, the mixture is too rich and the needle is set one notch lower; if it stalls or loses power, the mixture is too lean and the needle is set higher. If the engine runs smoothly and consistently in the mid-range, the setting is correct.
  • STEP 3 → Adjust the air mixture screw (lower RPM): From idle, open throttle sharply: If response is delayed or uneven, turn the screw 1/4 turn. Note: Open screw = leaner, closing screw = richer. Adjust gradually until the engine responds immediately and cleanly.

Signs of correct tuning: The engine runs smoothly and constantly in all speed ranges, without jerking or misfiring, and the spark plug is light brown after a full throttle run.

Pro tip: Always have a set of spare main jets with you (±2-3 sizes). Temperature, altitude and humidity influence carb performance. On cold days, a richer mixture may be necessary; in hot weather or at high altitudes, a leaner mixture may be better.

Carburetor maintenance

A carburetor only delivers optimum performance if it is correctly maintained.

  1. Regular cleaning: Remove the float chamber, clean the jets with compressed air or carburetor cleaner and check the float and needle valve. Dirt in the jets distorts the metering.
  2. Clean air filter: A clogged filter reduces the air flow and makes the mixture richer. Depending on use, you should clean or replace it more frequently in dusty environments.
  3. Correct fuel level: Check whether the float maintains the correct chamber level. If the level is too low, the mixture is lean and can cause engine damage.
  4. Check seals and hoses: Leaks (gaskets, cracked hoses) can lean the mixture. Check and replace seals and hoses regularly.
  5. Condition of slide and needle: Wear on these parts changes the tuning in the mid-range. If there is play or significant wear, you should replace the parts.

After long downtimes, old fuel remaining in the system can block the channels. There are two cleaning methods:

  1. With cleaning additive in the fuel, which dissolves deposits without having to remove the carburetor.
  2. Complete disassembly, recommended if the additive is not sufficient. The parts are cleaned with special agents and a fine brush, and their condition is checked at the same time.

Note: Modern fuels (with ethanol and additives) age quickly and are not ideal if a 2-stroke engine is not used for a longer period of time. If your moped is not used for several months, fuel quality deteriorates, the fuel becomes viscous and can block channels and jets in the carburetor, resulting in starting problems and poor engine operation. In older engines, these fuels can also attack seals and rubber parts. To avoid breakdowns and a complete carburetor removal, you should not leave your vehicle with fuel in the system for long periods of time. Regular use or at least occasional starting of the engine is ideal.

How often should you clean the carburetor? In normal use, every 6 to 12 months. In a very dusty environment or after a long downtime, you should check and clean earlier.

When changing the carburetor, in addition to the diameter, it is important that the carburetor connection fits correctly into the intake manifold to avoid functional problems. Most important assembly types:

Some original carburetors, especially on older models, are attached directly to the intake manifold with screws. In this case, the important dimension is the center-to-center distance of the mounting holes.

Mounting tips

  • Identify flange type: Rubber flange, metal clamp, srew-on
  • Measure the inside diameter of the intake manifold / flange and the connection width of the carburetor
  • Select a suitable model
  • After installation, check that there is no air leaks: Run the engine and spray some brake cleaner on the connections. if the idling speed changes, there is a leak.
