Moped carburetors: the complete guide

The carburetor is the key component of the intake system and has a significant impact on the performance of any engine. Vintage mopeds are usually fitted with Dell'Orto or Gurtner/Bing carburetors. There are also performance-enhancing tuning carburetors (from 12 mm to much larger diameters) for tuned engines. This guide is intended to help you choose the right carburetor.

Our range extends from low-priced standard carburetors to professional racing carburetor kits, compatible with the most popular mopeds and small motorcycles of the 70s/80s: Puch Maxi, Simson Schwalbe, Tomos A3, Hercules, Kreidler Florett, Zündapp, Peugeot 103, MBK 51, Piaggio Ciao and many more.

what is a carburetor and how does it work?

The carburetor generates and regulates the air-fuel mixture ensuring that a moped engine runs cleanly and efficiently. Carburetor adjustment directly affects engine behavior, fuel consumption and operating temperature.

During intake, a vacuum is created in the carburetor, which pulls fuel from the float chamber through the jets. When the throttle is opened, the throttle slide rises, allowing more air in while increasing the fuel flow. The main and idle jets as well as the needle determine the fuel quantity depending on the throttle position and engine speed. Proper tuning ensures efficient combustion, good performance and linear throttle response.

Especially on classic mopeds, which are often ridden at half throttle over long distances, a correct carburetor setting means a smooth running engine with a lower risk of failure, even on older engines with 6-volt ignition and simple cooling systems.

Important carburetor components on vintage mopeds

Understanding the individual components makes precise tuning across the entire rev range much easier. Each part has a specific function.

  • Float chamber and float: Stores the fuel, the float keeps the level constant via the float needle valve.
  • Jets: Meter the fuel. Main jet for high RPM, idle jet for low RPM. The part-load range is regulated via the needle.
  • Needle: It is connected to the throttle slide and regulates the fuel flow rate at part load / half throttle.
  • Throttle slide: Regulates airflow depending on throttle opening. Available as round slide, flat slide or diaphragm-controlled.
  • Choke: Facilitates cold starts, available as manual or automatic versions.

Carburetor types for classic mopeds: original, sport and racing

The choice depends on the intended use, engine setup and personal experience. There is no "best" carburetor, only the right one for your setup.

✅ Carburetor by intended use

ORIGINAL CARBURETOR (OEM CARBURETOR)

Standard carburetors are factory-installed and are set up to offer a compromise between fuel consumption and reliability. They are the ideal choice for true-to-original replacement and maintenance of mopeds for everyday use.

  • Diameter: 12-15 mm
  • Advantages: Cost-effective, durable, easy installation and maintenance.
  • Use: Standard engines, original components
  • Recommended: Dell'Orto SHA 12-14, Gurtner 12 mm, Bing 12-14 mm, original carburetors and replica carburetors from Motoforce

SPORT CARBURETOR

For lightly tuned engines. Improve flow and throttle response without excessive torque loss at low RPM.

  • Diameter: 15-19 mm
  • Advantages: Improved response, acceleration and top speed compared to the original carburetor.
  • Use: Tuned setups with a slight increase in power (50-70 cc sports cylinders, sports exhaust)
  • Recommended: Dell'Orto SHA 14-16 mm, Dell'Orto PHBG 15-19, Stage6, Polini CP

HIGH-PERFORMANCE carburetors: RACING & high-end

For high-performance engines and race engines. They maximize the performance of mopeds with larger displacement, with maximum flow and direct throttle response. Performance and behavior at high RPM clearly take precedence over fuel consumption.

  • Diameter: 19-38 mm
  • Advantages: Maximum flow, very direct response and significantly improved performance at high RPM.
  • Use: Only for heavily tuned engines with larger displacements, racing exhaust, tuning reed valve, modified gears and racing air filter.
  • Requirements: Experience in carburetor tuning or professional tuning.
  • Recommendations: Keihin PWK, Dell'Orto VHST, Mikuni TM, Stage6 R/T, Polini CP Evo.

Note on road approval: Carburetors with an enlarged cross-section can lead to problems during technical approval (TÜV/DEKRA) if 50 ccm displacement is specified in the vehicle documents. For use on public roads, please check the applicable regulations.

moped carburetor by slide type

  • Single slide valve (type SHA): Very common on classic mopeds such as Vespino, Derbi Variant or Piaggio Ciao. The slide is operated vertically via the throttle cable, but there is no needle for adjustment at mid RPM (partial load). The mixture is mainly controlled via the main jet, air mixture screw and, depending on the model, the emulsion tube. Simple, robust and easy to clean—ideal for original restorations and basic everyday use.
  • Round slide with needle: For Dell'Orto PHBG, Arreche or Polini CP. The round slide is controlled via the throttle cable, with the needle regulating the fuel quantity in the partial load. Precise tuning across all speed ranges, good throttle response, suitable for sports setups.
  • Flat slide: Typical for racing carburetors (PWK, Mikuni TM, certain CP Evo models), intended for performance-oriented racing setups. The intake tract is shortened and the air flow optimized, resulting in a direct throttle response and better performance at high engine speeds. Less tolerant of incorrect adjustment.

    Carburetor tuning on classic mopeds: finding the right balance

    The performance of a two-stroke moped does not depend solely on the carburetor, but on the consistency of the entire setup. An oversized carburetor on a stock engine, or a restrictive stock carburetor combined with a racing cylinder, will reduce performance and increase the risk of engine damage.

    Important basics for 50cc carburetor tuning

    Before you change the carburetor or install a sports/racing cylinder, you should observe a few basic principles:

    • Constant flow: air filter, reed valve, intake manifold, carburetor, cylinder and exhaust form a chain. Any bottleneck limits the performance of the entire engine.
    • Balance between low and high RPM: Large diameter carburetors favor performance at high rpm, but often come at the expense of responsiveness and torque at low rpm. The choice of carburetor must be based on the intended use (city traffic or race track).
    • Carburetor tuning is mandatory: Every change (cylinder, exhaust, air filter) has an effect on the air-fuel ratio. Jets and needles must be adjusted accordingly.

    Only well-matched components ensure reliability and maximum performance.

    Adjusting and maintaining a moped carburetor

    A poorly adjusted sports or racing carburetor can perform worse than a correctly adjusted OEM carburetor. Adjustment is verified via spark plug reading, engine behavior, fuel consumption and throttle response.

    Why correct carburetor tuning matters

    A poor air/fuel ratio has a direct impact on performance and reliability:

    • Mixture too rich (too much fuel): High fuel consumption, blue/white smoke, dirty and oily spark plug, loss of power at high revs, greasy exhaust.
    • Mixture too lean (too little fuel): Overheating, detonations, very bright or "glazed" spark plug, high risk of piston seizure, loss of power.

    Correct tuning is indicated by a light brown / tan spark plug, smooth engine behavior across the rev range, reasonable consumption, stable temperature and clean throttle response.

    moped carburetor tuning - step by step

    Correct adjustment is the prerequisite for maximum performance without risk. Always work from top to bottom: full throttle first, then mid-range, finally idle. Proven method:

    • STEP 1 → Main jet (high RPM): Install a main jet that is clearly too large so the engine runs rich and begins to bog down, as if the choke were engaged. Gradually reduce the jet size until the engine revs cleanly. Test ride after each change. If engine speed drops when opening the throttle quickly, the mixture is too lean. Once close, ride at full throttle for several hundred meters, then shut off the engine immediately and check the spark plug: If it is black, the mixture is still too rich and you need a smaller jet; if it is white, the mixture is too lean and there is a risk of piston seizure; a light brown colour is optimal.
    • STEP 2 → Needle (partial load): Ride steadily at half throttle and listen to the engine. If it sputters or runs unevenly, the mixture is too rich—lower the needle (move clip down). If it bogs or lacks power, the mixture is too lean—raise the needle (move clip up). Smooth, consistent running in the mid-range indicates correct adjustment. On classic carburetors (SHA, Gurtner), mid-range adjustment is less precise and depends more on the main jet and emulsion tube.
    • STEP 3 → Air mixture screw (low RPM): From idle, open the throttle quickly. If revs do not rise immediately and cleanly, turn the screw by ¼ turn. Remember: opening the screw leans the mixture, closing it enriches it. Repeat until throttle response is immediate without hesitation.

    Signs of a correct setting: Smooth response across the entire rev range, no misfires, and a light brown spark plug after a full-throttle test.

    Pro tip: Always have a set of spare main jets on hand (±2-3 sizes), as temperature, altitude and humidity affect the carburetor setting. Cold weather may require slightly richer settings; hot weather or high altitude usually require leaning out.

    To ensure long-term optimal performance, the following points must be observed:

    1. Regular cleaning: Remove the float bowl, clean the carburetor with compressed air or carburetor cleaner, check the float and needle. Impurities in the jets can change the fuel metering.
    2. Correct fuel level: Check whether the float is maintaining the correct fuel level. Too low a fuel level makes the mixture lean and can damage the engine (especially on mopeds with a high-mounted tank with lower fuel pressure).
    3. Check gaskets and hoses: Leaks due to a cracked intake manifold, porous lines or leaking gaskets can lean the mixture. Check the seals / gaskets regularly and replace them if necessary.
    4. Condition of the slide valve and needle: Signs of wear on the slide valve and needle affect the setting at medium engine speeds. If there is too much play or visible signs of wear, these parts must be replaced.

    After a long service life, aged fuel can block the channels. There are two methods of cleaning:

    1. Using a cleaning additive, which is added to the fuel and dissolves deposits without having to remove the carburetor.
    2. Complete disassembly, which is recommended if the additive is not working. The parts are cleaned with special products and a fine brush, which also gives you the opportunity to check their condition.

    Note: Modern fuels containing ethanol age quickly and are not ideal for two-stroke engines that sit unused. After several months, fuel degrades, thickens and can clog jets and passages, leading to starting issues and poor running. On older engines, these fuels may also attack seals and rubber components. To avoid problems and full carburetor teardown, do not store mopeds long-term with fuel in the system. Ideally, ride regularly or at least start the engine occasionally.

    How often should the carburetor be cleaned? In normal use, about every 6-12 months. An earlier check is advisable in dusty environments or after long periods of inactivity.

    When replacing the carburetor, it is important that the intake manifold fits perfectly in addition to the actual carburetor diameter. There are essentially three main types:

    ✅ Rubber flange (flexible)

    Installation tips

    • Determine flange type: Rubber or metal clamp
    • Measure the inside diameter of the intake manifold / flange and the connection of the carburetor
    • Select a suitable model
    • Check for leaks after installation: Spray a little brake cleaner on the connections while the engine is running. If the engine speed fluctuates, there is a leak.
