Motorcycle transmission

On a motorcycle, the transmission consists of the gearbox (primary transmission) and the chain kit (final transmission made up of the gearbox output sprocket, chain and sprocket).

The gearbox is made up of sprockets, selector forks and a number of gearshift components, so you can always drive at the right engine speed, at different speeds.

The pinion and ring gear have a direct impact on top speed and acceleration. A short gear gives good acceleration, to the detriment of top speed, and vice versa.

Motorcycle transmissions - both gearboxes and final drives - need maintenance! But modifications can also be made to enhance performance or character.

Motorcycle transmission maintenance

To properly maintain your transmission and related accessories, refer to your motorcycle's owner's manual / service manual, which contains a wealth of useful information: gearbox oil change intervals, maximum chain length, standard dimensions, etc.

To prolong the life of your chain kit, we recommend regular cleaning and lubrication of the chain (a well-greased chain even contributes to the power of your motorcycle, by reducing transmission losses).

The chain guide and swingarm pad should also be replaced regularly. Chain tensioners must be in good working order to ensure precise tension adjustment.

The gearbox should be changed regularly withquality oil to preserve the gears and even the clutch.

Modifying a motorcycle transmission

The easiest way to modify a motorcycle transmission is to change the final drive ratio. Lengthening the gearing gives more top speed, shortening it gives better acceleration.

On some motorcycles (especially 50cc bikes), it is also possible to replace the gearbox gears. Indeed, complete gearboxes are available, with modified ratios and reinforced components, from the best brands:
