Description
J. Costa Variator XRP Yamaha T-Max (2012 – 2016). J. Costa variators have become known for considerably boosting the performance of (maxi) scooter engines. They work differently – they use gliding type weights that are sitting in small openings instead of the more common roller type weights - allowing the variator to open and close in a linear fashion. This linear design is what is responsible for the "turbo" effect this variator provides.
The new high-end XRP (=Xtreme Racing Parts) CVTs introduce another performance-enhancing feature: a recessed washer, or ring, that sits between sleeve and weight carrier plate. It acts as a heatsink, and when it comes to transmission parts, less heat means better, more reliable performance.
The holes where the weights sit in are perforated, using air pressure to pronounce the push effect on the pins (and reverse). Gears can kick in / kick down smoother and quicker which translates into better response and smoother shifting characteristics.
J. Costa variators have a shorter transmission ratio at lower rpm range resulting in improved acceleration. At higher rpm range, with the variator fully opened, transmission ratio is taller which leads to increased top end speed. And dreaded dips in the power curve are a part of history.
The kit includes a complete variator (with sleeve and weights) and a high-quality drive belt.
scooter CVT
Modern scooters are equipped with a continuously variable transmission, the so-called CVT, also called variator.
CVT Parts:
- Front pulley, movable. It contains the variator weights and has a special shape with an inclined surface to allow the V-belt to move freely up and down.
- Ramp plate: Holds the weights in place.
- Variator sleeve: Serves as a bearing for the variator, which moves axially back and forth, i.e., opens and closes.
- CVT roller weights: Adjustment weights that play a critical role in function and performance.
original, Sport and Oversize CVTs
- Original: Original or OEM quality CVTs are equipped with a restrictor to limit the speed to 45km/h. There are riders who remove the restrictor to derestrict their scooter and unleash the full performance without restrictions.
- Sport: Sport CVTs are lighter than the original and are characterized by special angles and a special coating, which increases the top speed, but especially acceleration.
- Oversize: Based on the same principle as the Sport CVT, but has larger dimensions. With an oversize / overrange vario, the performance of the scooter can be increased even further.
You should also always replace the V-belt when replacing the CVT or go for a complete CVT kit.
