The crankshaft is a core component of every scooter engine. Its job is to convert the linear motion of the piston into smooth rotational movement and transmit power through the transmission to the rear wheel. In doing so, it is exposed to extreme loads: combustion pressure, permanent friction, high temperatures and high engine speeds. A crankshaft is not a simple component, but is precisely engineered to withstand these conditions.

If the crankshaft fails, the engine comes to a standstill. It is the central axis of all engine movement: Piston, CVT and gearbox. Each revolution requires a perfect balance between the crank webs, connecting rods and bearings. If this balance is lost, vibrations occur, causing rough engine operation and potentially severe engine damage.

A reinforced crankshaft or racing crankshaft dies more than increase performance, it is crucial for durability and reliability, especially on tuned 50cc scooters.

When increasing displacement to 70, 88, or 100 cc, the stock crankshaft is usually no longer sufficient. The solution is to upgrade to a reinforced crankshaft or a long-stroke crankshaft capable of handling higher torque and higher RPM reliably. Without a suitable crankshaft, both performance and engine longevity will suffer.

Why replace the crankshaft?

A crankshaft operates permanently under extreme conditions: high temperatures, continuous load, and lubrication that is not always ideal. Over time—or due to poor maintenance—it wears out and can fail. When this happens, the damage is often not limited to the crankshaft alone; the cylinder and other critical components can also be affected, resulting in far higher repair costs than a timely crankshaft replacement.

Crankshaft failure is very common on 50cc scooters. In these cases, installing a reinforced crankshaft is highly recommended. For setups with 80, 88, or 100 cc, a long-stroke crankshaft (43–45 mm) is required.

Assembly tips

  • Always use new bearings and seals
  • Check perfect alignment ⇒ prevents vibrations and damage
  • If you have no experience, leave the installation to a specialist or professional workshop

Crankshaft Maintenance and inspection

Each crankshaft type requires proper care to ensure long-term reliability. During regular maintenance work, such as piston replacement, bearing clearances and tolerances should be checked and kept within specified limits.

Pay close attention to unusual noises or vibrations. These are usually the first signs of wear on the crankshaft or bearings. If bearing noise becomes audible or vibrations increase, the engine should be inspected immediately to prevent serious damage.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about crankshafts

⇒ Do I have to replace the crankshaft when increasing displacement? Yes. The stock crankshaft cannot reliably handle higher torque and increased RPM. A reinforced or racing crankshaft is required.

⇒ Can I replace the crankshaft myself? Crankshaft replacement is a demanding job and requires special tools. If you lack experience, professional installation is strongly recommended. Alternatively, strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions or an appropriate installation guide.
