Gilera Runner - General Information
With the Runner, Gilera offers a scooter with an unconventional design. Available in engine displacements ranging from 50 to 200 cc (depending on the model year) with both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, it features a much stiffer frame than most scooters thanks to a central reinforcement beam. Although this sacrifices ease of access (you have to lift your leg to get on the scooter), it results in a much more precise and sporty chassis.
Here we’ll focus on the 50 cc model. The first generation (1997 to 2005) was offered in a “standard” version and an SP version. What sets them apart? The SP features a rear disc brake, whereas the standard version has a drum brake.
Starting in 2006, the Runner was renamed simply the SP and underwent a complete overhaul: new chassis, new design, new features. We’ll cover that on another page!
Gilera Runner 50 - Engine Specifications
The engine is a long, water-cooled, single-cylinder 2-stroke Piaggio engine. This engine is known for its ability to become a powerhouse, and in fact, it serves as the basis for many racing machines. Thanks to liquid cooling, it’s always at the optimal temperature to deliver its full power. Fuel is supplied via a carburetor. It can be started electrically or with a kickstart.
Of course, we carry all the parts needed to service, repair, or even tune it: cylinders, crankshafts, exhaust, variators, clutch, ignition...
Gilera Runner 50 / Runner SP 50 - Chassis Information
The suspension consists of an inverted fork up front and a monoshock at the rear. The braking system varies by version: front disc and rear drum, or front and rear discs on the SP model. With 12-inch wheels, it offers a good balance between maneuverability and stability.
The Runner’s greatest strength lies in its chassis structure. As mentioned earlier, a reinforcement bar has been welded between the rear beams and the steering column. This increase in rigidity prevents the chassis from flexing during hard braking, allowing for a much sportier ride.
Once again, this is an extremely compelling feature for racers, as the chassis serves as a perfect foundation for track use.
In our online store, we carry not only everything you need to enhance the Runner’s appearance (fairings, headlights, taillights, etc.) but also to keep it in top condition (brakes, bearings, tires, suspension).
