Piaggio Sfera 50 NSL - General information
The Sfera, the Italian word for "ball", was presented to the public for the first time in Monte Carlo in 1990. The scooter was a completely new design and replaced the Vespa with a new concept, since the Vespa was equipped with somewhat outdated technology, as the same model had been built here for almost 50 years. The Piaggio Sfera only took over the Classic Vespa's basic shape - self-supporting sheet steel bodywork, step-through frame, 2-stroke engine and a front wheel attached to a swing arm. The fairing was now made entirely of plastic and the Sfera also consisted of a torsion-resistant central tube frame and a steering tube. However, the new construction technology also introduced some minor problems, such as accessing certain parts, which on the Sfera was only possible in several successive steps and made maintenance and repair more difficult.
There were special editions as two-seaters or single-seaters, special rims or special speedometers, such as the Sfera NSL or Sfera RST.
Piaggio Sfera - Engine
The Piaggio Sfera has a short, air-cooled, single-cylinder Piaggio 2-stroke engine with decent output and speed. It has a modern automatic transmission (CVT) with V-belt. The engine is another difference compared to the Vespas; its design results in a low and forward-shifted center of gravity.
Piaggio Sfera 50 - Chassis
The front suspension consists of a fork and and the rear suspension consists of a shock absorber. From 1991 to 1994, the braking system consisted of two drum brakes. From 1995, it was equipped with a disc brake at the front.
