The brake  - Safety first!

The brake is an important component, its task is to reduce the speed of a vehicle and to bring the vehicle to a halt as quickly as possible and with the shortest possible braking distance. The brake system consists of a brake lever, a Bowden cable or brake line, and the brake caliper including the brake pads. On scooters, motorcycles and mopeds there are 2 types of brake systems: disc and drum brakes.

How does a drum brake work?

The drum brake works on a simple principle: there is a drum on the outside, and the brake shoes press from the inside. By pressing the brake lever, the rider pulls the Bowden cable, which presses the brake shoes against the brake drum. The friction slows down the drum and the wheel connected to it.

How does a disc brake work?

The disc brake, on the other hand, works via a hydraulic system: the brake pump is connected to the caliper through a brake line (usually braided steel). Pressing the brake lever exerts pressure on the brake master cylinder, this pressure is transmitted via the brake fluid, to the brake pistons of the brake caliper, and press the brake pads against the brake disc. The resulting friction decelerates your vehicle. Disc brakes have some advantages:

  • Better wet braking behavior
  • No fading
  • Better heat dissipation
  • Better dosage
  • Easier maintenance

Stronger brakes for high performance tuning projects

Brake shoes or pads need to be changed regularly as the friction lining wears down over time. In general, we always recommend installing stronger brakes for powerful setups. Please always think about your safety:
