Carburetor Jets: Essential for Optimal Carburetor Tuning

An engine is powerful and reliable only when it maintains a perfect air-fuel ratio across all RPM ranges. To achieve this, you must find the ideal carburetor setting, primarily by adjusting the jets.

Functions of the Jets

Jets regulate the amount of fuel delivered into the carburetor to prepare the mixture with air.

The main jet primarily influences high RPMs when the throttle slide is fully open (wide open throttle). It is the most important jet for engine reliability.

The pilot jet / idle jet, on the other hand, affects the lower RPM range and throttle response at small slide openings.

On PWK-type carburetors, there is also a power jet. This provides a bit more fuel at very high RPMs.

finding The Right Jet

The more an engine is tuned, the sharper its power characteristics become and the more sensitive it is to carburetor settings. Therefore, you must adapt the jet size to the setup and the specific conditions: ambient temperature, altitude, and sometimes even humidity.

To find the appropriate jet after an engine modification, you can use the following indicators:

  • The engine must run cleanly: immediate revving, no stuttering or bogging in the low end, and free revving into high RPMs.
  • The spark plug reading: After a test run under full load (at least 15-20 seconds at wide open throttle), you must remove the spark plug and check the color of the electrode. Ideally, it should be tan / brown.

Signs of a jet that is too large (mixture too rich):

  • The engine struggles to reach high RPMs and stutters at the top end.
  • The spark plug is too dark, black, and oily.

Signs of a jet that is too small (mixture too lean):

  • The engine has misfires in the lower RPM range, then revs up but feels restricted at full throttle.
  • The spark plug is too light, almost white, and very dry.

Pro Tips:

To find the correct jet, you should perform several tests and increase or decrease the jet sizes step by step. A bit of patience is required here. Additionally, ensure absolute cleanliness, as any dirt in the carburetor can lead to a breakdown.

Once you have found the right jets and the carburetor is well-tuned, you should keep an eye on the altitude and ambient temperature. If your engine runs perfectly at 300 meters altitude at 15 degrees, it might not perform the same at 700 meters at 0 degrees or at 10 meters at 35 degrees.

The setting must then be adjusted as follows:

  • Decrease main jet size → when altitude increases or temperature rises.
  • Increase main jet size → when altitude decreases or temperature drops.

Note: Motocross bikes are often supplied with a user manual containing tables that specify which jets to use under which conditions.
