Manual Transmission

On motorcycles, pit bikes and supermotards, the drivetrain consists of the transmission (primary drive) and the chain kit (secondary drive consisting of front sprocket, chain, and rear sprocket).

The transmission is composed of gears, shift forks, and numerous parts that enable gear changes so that you always ride in the correct RPM range at different speeds.

The front and rear sprocket have a direct impact on top speed and acceleration. A short gear ratio provides good acceleration at the expense of top speed and vice versa.

Motorcycle TRansmission - Maintenance and Care

The drivetrain of a motorcycle, both the gearbox and the secondary drive, must be maintained. Furthermore, you can also change the gear ratio to achieve higher performance or to change the engine character.

Manual Transmission Maintenance

To properly maintain your drivetrain and the associated accessories, check your motorcycle's owner's manual, which contains a lot of useful information: intervals for gear oil changes, maximum chain length, standard dimensions, etc.

To extend the service life of your chain kit, it is recommended to clean and grease the chain regularly (a well-lubricated chain can even contribute to your motorcycle's performance by reducing transmission losses).

The chain guide and the swingarm slider should also be replaced regularly. The chain tensioners must be functional to ensure precise adjustment of the tension.

The gear oil should be changed regularly with high-quality oil to protect the gears and the clutch.

Changing the Gear Ratio

The easiest way to modify a motorcycle's drivetrain is to adjust the secondary drive ratio. A longer ratio allows for a higher top speed, while a shorter ratio provides better acceleration.

On certain motorcycles (especially 50cc bikes like supermotos and enduro bikes), it is also possible to replace the gears. Complete transmissions with modified gear ratios and reinforced elements are available from top brands:
