Moped clutch – automatic and simple

How a moped clutch works

Not all classic mopeds are equipped with a variator, but they all have an automatic clutch. Like on a geared bike, it engages or disengages the engine and drivetrain. The difference is that it is usually a centrifugal clutch that engages automatically at a certain RPM.
Unlike modern scooters, moped clutches work in two different ways:

  • On pedal mopeds, the clutch is driven directly by the crankshaft. It is a centrifugal clutch with clutch shoes that are held closed on the outside by springs and drive the bell, as well as a central plate that is pushed outward by balls. This plate mainly influences the engagement point. The clutch shoes provide the power transfer.
    As engine speed increases, centrifugal force rises, the shoes open and engage the clutch bell, which directly drives the belt. At idle, the belt therefore remains stationary.
  • On mopeds with a kickstarter, the clutch is located on the rear pulley. Here as well, it is a centrifugal clutch driven via the belt, which opens as RPM increases. It drives the clutch bell, which in turn moves the sprocket of the final drive. Unlike the system with a front-mounted clutch, the belt rotates even at idle.

In both cases, no direct clutch actuation by the rider is required.

WARNING : On some German mopeds such as Simson or Kreidler, the clutch is not automatic. Its operation is more similar to a gear bike clutch.

Moped clutch and tuning

As with any two-wheeler, the clutch must be matched to increased engine performance. On a moped, this is not only about durability but also about the engagement point. A centrifugal clutch can be adjusted.
More powerful engines usually reach their power band, meaning maximum efficiency, at higher RPM. For this reason, it can make sense to delay the engagement point. This improves acceleration and allows the engine to rev more cleanly. Depending on the design, whether the clutch is mounted on the crankshaft or on the pulley, tuning can be done via balls, shims of the clutch plate, clutch shoe springs, or the weight of the clutch shoes.

Recommendations:

Depending on the setup, it is not always necessary to replace the entire clutch. However, adjustment is usually recommended.

  • When switching from a stock exhaust to a performance exhaust, the clutch can be adjusted more easily, for example by removing balls or using additional shims. Stronger clutch springs can also be used.

  • When using a higher-performance cylinder kit, a reinforced and lighter clutch is recommended. This increases durability and raises the engagement RPM.

  • On a heavily tuned engine with a narrow power band, a reinforced and lighter complete clutch should be used. In this case, a system on the rear pulley is useful to relieve the crankshaft and make tuning easier.

Another component also plays a role: the clutch bell. As engine performance increases, the thermal load on the clutch also rises. A suitable, possibly ventilated clutch bell should therefore be selected to match the clutch.
