Moped Variator

A moped's CVT system operates through four elements: the variator, the drive belt, the rear pulley, and the engine spring (or torque driver).

A variator or CVT is not standard on all classic mopeds. Depending on the model series and year of manufacture, there are versions with or without a CVT system.

It is important to note that Peugeot, Piaggio, and MBK use different systems.

On a moped equipped with a variator, you have a continuously variable automatic transmission that provides smooth acceleration without shifting jolts.

How a Moped Variator Works:

Variator:

A variator allows the gear ratio to change automatically and variably depending on the engine speed. Although the systems vary, the principle remains the same:

  • The variator is mounted directly on the crankshaft and rotates at engine speed.
  • It consists of a fixed and a movable pulley, with the drive belt running in between. These pulleys are conically shaped.
  • The movable pulley contains centrifugal weights, balls, or rollers: small moving components that move outward due to centrifugal force and move the pulley.
  • Since the drive belt is wedged between the conical pulleys, it slides upward. This changes the gear ratio and the speed (similar to a larger sprocket on a motorcycle: the larger it is, the higher the top speed).

Note: Heavier weights or balls cause the variator to open more slowly, while lighter ones make it open faster. Adjusting these weights is essential after engine upgrades to ensure optimal power transfer.

Drive Belt:

The belt provides the connection between the front pulley (variator) and the rear pulley. It slides from the inside to the outside on the variator to vary the speed.

As the belt rises on the variator, it would actually become too short. How is this compensated for? The answer follows below ↓!

Engine Spring / Torque Driver:

To compensate for the movement of the belt and the change in length, Peugeot and MBK mounted the engine so that it can pivot on an axis. This allows it to swing forward and backward to compensate for the belt length. An engine spring is used to ensure the engine returns to its starting position when letting off the throttle. Like the weights, this spring must be adapted to the engine's power output.

Piaggio, on the other hand, was a pioneer with a torque drive system similar to that of a scooter. The engine does not swing here. There is a second pulley unit at the rear, which also features a fixed and a movable pulley. During acceleration, the drive belt moves inward; when letting off the throttle, the spring pushes the pulley back together.

OEM Variators

Peugeot Variator

On Peugeot models, the movable pulley is pushed by levers with tilting weights. Two opposing levers are fixed on axes and press against the pulley. The weights are screwed onto these levers to adjust the opening speed.

MBK Variator

MBK relies on balls to push the movable pulley. These move in tracks from the inside to the outside (centrifugal force).

Piaggio Variator

Piaggio developed a system with variator weights (rollers) very similar to those used in later scooters. The principle is the same as the MBK balls, but the rollers provide a larger contact surface, making the system more efficient.

Note: These three original systems have a limited adjustment range, and tuning via weights or balls is often difficult.

Sport and Racing Variators for Vintage Mopeds

Tuners quickly realized that for high-performance engines, the entire system must be optimized. As a result, variators based on scooter designs entered the moped world.

Optimized Ramps and Variator Weights

Almost all well-known brands in 50cc tuning now rely on variators with large CVT weights (scooter type). The ramp angles of the pulleys have been optimized and high-quality materials are used. The goal is maximum belt grip combined with high durability. The use of variator weights makes tuning easier due to the huge selection of different weights available.
