Tires and Rims for Mopeds

Classic mopeds generally feature similar technological solutions to larger displacement motorcycles, although they are often kept simpler. The main difference lies in the tire dimensions, which are overall very narrow.

Rims can be manufactured in various ways: as cast aluminum rims on sporty models and certain special editions, or as classic spoked wheels using a combination of a rim ring (aluminum or steel), spokes, and wheel hubs.

Maintenance, Repair, and Tuning Rims

As with all two-wheelers, it is necessary to maintain the wheels, which also allows for improving both appearance and performance.

Maintenance and Repair

Regarding tires, it is essential to monitor their condition: they must be able to displace water correctly (sufficient tread depth), must not show any cracks, must be inflated to the recommended pressure, and should be adapted to the current season and intended use.

For the rims, the bearings must rotate freely and must not have excessive play. The axles must be in perfect condition, as must the bolts. The spokes must be correctly tensioned. The wheel hubs, where the brake shoes are located, must not be excessively worn.

Note: It is best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding dimensions, speed and load ratings, tire pressure, and tightening torques.

Tuning Rims

In the customizing / tuning sector, colored complete wheels are available as spoked or cast wheels. You can also find rim tapes, special stickers, valves with original designs, or chain tensioners made of anodized aluminum.

Furthermore, the retro look of a vintage moped can be perfectly highlighted with whitewall tires.
