The Chassis - the Foundation of your 50cc Motorcycle

The chassis, also known as the frame or suspension, consists of the frame, suspension, wheels, and everything that houses the engine and connects it to the road. The condition and quality of the chassis components have a direct impact on handling.

It must therefore be maintained regularly and adapted accordingly for performance increases or special uses such as racing.

Motorcycle Chassis: Key Elements and Tips

Original or Racing Shock Absorbers

On most motorcycles (both 50cc supermoards / enduro bikes and large machines or motocross bikes), the shock absorber provides the connection between the frame and the swingarm where the rear wheel is attached. Whether equipped with or without a linkage, it serves to absorb impacts and ensure sufficient riding comfort.

The advantage of a linkage system is that it significantly increases suspension travel (very useful off-road) while also ensuring more progressive damping. For street use, a linkage is not strictly necessary and is therefore sometimes omitted, which in turn offers advantages in terms of weight and ease of maintenance.

Apart from genuine sport motorcycles (motocross, hard enduro, track racing machines), original shock absorbers are usually quite basic and generally do not have adjustment options. Therefore, it is advisable to install sport or racing shock absorbers if you want to use your 50cc motorcycle more dynamically. These shocks are adjustable to find the ideal compromise between comfort and stiffness (adjustable preload, compression, and rebound).

Shock Absorber Maintenance:

  • An original motorcycle shock absorber is normally never opened. It is neither serviced nor is the gas refilled (spare parts are rare); instead, it is completely replaced if it leaks. You can therefore get these at a relatively affordable price. CAUTION: For sport motorcycles, motocross, and hard enduro, you should always consider racing shocks (see below)!
  • A racing shock absorber must be maintained regularly: regular oil changes, gas refills, checking spring dimensions... Although the purchase price is higher, spare parts are available and inexpensive.
  • Motorcycles with linkages require well-lubricated bearings, which must not have too much play.

FORK

The fork is located at the front of the vehicle and forms the connection between the chassis and the front wheel. It provides shock absorption for the front wheel. On motorcycles, you usually find classic telescopic forks or upside-down forks. As with the shock absorber, only sport motorcycles come from the factory with highly developed, adjustable components. On other models, the fork is usually not adjustable, which is why special parts should be installed to improve damping.

Fork Maintenance:

  • A standard motorcycle fork requires very little maintenance. Ensure that the oil seals are tight and replace them if they leak. This is also the opportunity to change the oil.
  • Like the racing shock absorber, the racing fork requires more maintenance: regular oil changes, seals and bushings in perfect condition, and occasional checks of the spring dimensions.

Steering Head Bearings

The steering head bearings sit at the triple tree and ensure smooth rotation of the handlebars. They also need to be maintained (occasionally greased) and replaced if necessary if the steering shows unusual play or "notches" when turning the handlebars.

Useful Info: Note that for motocross and enduro, it is necessary to grease these bearings regularly to protect them. They are heavily stressed by impacts, dust, and mud. This also applies to the swingarm and linkage bearings.
