Description
Polini Digital Internal Rotor Ignition Evolution Piaggio / Gilera - a fantastic racing part straight from Italy.
This part was developed for the race track, so you should read the installation guide and manual thoroughly.
The ground-breaking feature(s) of this inner rotor ignition is its stator and rotor, or rather the lack thereof. Instead, the ignition work via a light-weight "ring" functioning as a transmitter and a simple pick-up. Reduced weight means less dragging down of the crankshaft which translates into considerably better throttle response, improved revving and excellent acceleration. In addition, there is less stress on the crankshaft bearing so its service life is prolonged.
You'll have to use a min. 4.5Ah battery (Lithium-Ion) with this ignition. Keep in mind that high-revving engines will suck more power out of the unit - a 12,000rpm motor will use approx. 0,7Ah. Under normal conditions, with a fully charged battery, you can get about 4 - 6 hours.
The ignition comes with a CDI and installation software (CD) allowing you to program your own ignition curve taking the set up of your scooter and what you want to do with it into consideration. A test bench is strongly recommended for this.
Inner Rotor Ignition
An internal rotor ignition is a racing ignition designed to increase performance. Inner rotor ignitions are designed for motorsports and competition, in rare cases they also provide power for vehicle lighting. (e.g. the MVT ignition).
Advantages of an internal rotor ignition
Inner rotor ignitions are the ultimate choice for the race track, they are however not really suitable for street use.
The compact and lightweight internal rotor puts less weight on the crankshaft and allows for quick revving, very high engine speeds and an enormous power increase at high rpm.
Another advantage is that this type of ignition is less susceptible to moisture than standard ignitions.
Tip: You may want to consider a tuning ignition cover with additional holes / cutouts to improve ventilation.
Disadvantages of an internal rotor ignition
RPMs increase faster due to the lower mass, this will affect torque at low RPMs, though. Therefore, internal rotor ignitions are only worthwhile for racing, because on the racetrack you'll constantly stay at high engine speeds.
Installing and adjusting an internal rotor ignition
Installing an internal rotor ignition requires technical knowledge and careful adjustments to keep the engine running optimally and really optimize performance. We recommend our tutorial to learn how to install and adjust an internal rotor ignition.
