Scooter cylinder - The heart of your engine

Many scooters are equipped with 2-stroke engines, and the cylinder is the central component that determines engine performance. While the cylinder head is usually the focus of 4-stroke engines, in a 2-stroke scooter everything depends on the cylinder: power, torque, throttle response and reliability.

This is where the magic happens. The air-fuel mixture is transformed into pure energy, and the cylinder sets the rules: maximum power, torque, acceleration and whether the engine runs reliably or not.

That's why choosing the right cylinder kit is crucial for how your scooter behaves. Material, displacement, port timings, piston type ... every detail counts and shapes the engine's character.

But be careful: in order to unlock the cylinder's full potential, the rest of the setup must match the cylinder: Crankshaft, exhaust, carburetor, transmission ... everything must work in harmony. Only then will the engine respond well, run reliably, and make every twist of the throttle enjoyable.

cylinder types and characteristics - original, sport, racing or high-end

⇒ 50cc Original Cylinder

Ideal for everyday use. Made of cast iron or aluminum, usually with a 2-ring piston. Offers high reliability, low fuel consumption, and easy maintenance. The power delivery is balanced, ideal for riders who value durability over maximum output.

⇒ Sport Cylinder
For a more dynamic ride without major modifications. Available in cast iron or aluminum, with 1-ring or 2-ring pistons. Delivers noticeably better acceleration and torque than stock while maintaining strong reliability. To get the most out of it, a small adjustment of carburetor and CVT setup is recommended.

⇒ Racing Cylinder
Built for competition and high-performance setups. Provides significantly more power and torque. Requires technical know-how for installation and reinforced components, especially the crankshaft and clutch.

⇒ High-End Cylinder
Top-level performance. Made of aluminum with 1-ring piston, offering maximum power and throttle response. Requires frequent maintenance, professional installation and the use of high-end components for reliable operation.

Note: Racing and high-end setups are designed for track use only. Only OEM and some Sport cylinders are street legal.

Cylinders for every riding style - from city traffic to racing

Whether commuting to work, riding with friends or fast off-the-line starts at traffic lights -there’s a cylinder kit for every purpose. From kits for popular models like Yamaha Jog, Aerox, Piaggio Zip, Peugeot Speedfight to exclusive custom builds for tuning fans: the choice is huge.

Cylinders for all tuning levels

Most cylinder kits come complete: Cylinder head, piston, rings, circlips and gaskets (with some exceptions), ready to install and go. There is a huge selection of spare parts for easy maintenance and repairs.

In short: Sport cylinders are the entry level for tuning, Racing takes performance to the next level and High-end is only for those who know exactly what they want and don't want to compromise.

When it comes to brands, the big names offer cylinders for all levels: Stage6 R/T, Motoforce Racing, Airsal, Top Performances, Polini, Malossi... and many more.

Scooter tuning - setup and maximum performance

This is where it gets serious: simply changing the cylinder is not enough. To get best results, all components need to be matched to the new cylinder: Performance exhaust, reinforced crankshaft, readjusted carburetor, optimized variator - every detail counts. Only then the engine truly comes alive and delivers full power.

Component combinations at a glance

  • OEM quality 50cc cylinder: simple configuration with stock-grade components for maximum reliability and durability.
  • Sport cylinder: carburetor 17.5-21 mm, performance exhaust (e.g. Yasuni Z, Stage6 Streetrace, Tecnigas Next-R). Stock crankshaft is fine, but a reinforced one adds safety. A sport variator improves acceleration.
  • Racing setup: a larger carburetor (19-32 mm) and a race exhaust such as Stage6 R1200, Yasuni R or Malossi MHR are essential. A reinforced crankshaft is not optional, but mandatory, and the CVT should be at least Sport or Oversize.
  • High-end racing: maximum output. Carburetor 24-38 mm, high-end racing exhausts such as Stage6 R/T or 2Fast. At this level, a reinforced crankshaft and an oversize CVT are mandatory to handle the extreme load and exploit every RPM.

Note: Carburetor sizes and exhaust volumes are guidelines and must always match displacement and cylinder class. For example, a 50cc Racing setup doesn’t require the same carburetor size as an 88cc Sport engine.

→ Ideal compression ratio and squish clearance?
For road use with a 50cc cylinder: squish of 0.8-1.0 mm and compression ratio of 11:1 are proven values. On the race track, squish can be reduced to 0.6-0.7 mm and compression ratio increased to up to 13:1.

→ Are there risks when mixing parts from different brands?
Yes: manufacturing tolerances, unbalanced carburetion, compression loss or even piston seizures. It’s safest to use complete kits or proven component combinations.
