Scooter CVT: design, setup and performance

The CVT, often also called variator, is the central component of the continuously variable transmission on 2-stroke and 4-stroke scooters. Its function is to optimize the power generated by the engine by continuously and automatically adjusting the transmission ratio depending on speed and riding conditions. A well-maintained and correctly set CVT ensures smoother acceleration, better throttle response and overall improved performance.

For the system to work correctly, the weight of the CVT rollers and the stiffness of the contra spring must be matched to the engine. Incorrect setup can lead to poor power transmission, slow or jerky take-offs and clutch slippage.

We offer a wide range of variators, ready to install and compatible with the most common models: Yamaha Aerox / Jog, Piaggio Zip / Liberty / Typhoon, Peugeot Kisbee / Speedfight, Kymco Agility and many more. We stock well-known brands such as:

Variator components for scooters and maxi scooters

In our online shop you can get all CVT components individually at a very good price-performance ratio:

✅ Pulley

✅ Fanwheel

✅ Sliders → typical wear part, should be replaced regularly

✅ CVT boss

✅ CVT roller weights → important to match the weight to the engine and setup

    • Heavier rollers = slower opening of the variator (no effect on top speed, this is a common misconception)
    • Lighter rollers = faster opening of the variator, usually required for high-revving engines

✅  Additional spare parts: star washers, starter gears, gaskets, shims, nuts and fasteners.

Stock, sport or oversize CVT

We offer variators for all types of setups: from sport models with optimized ramps for lightly tuned engines to oversize variators with extended range for engines with larger displacement and higher power.

There are also stock variators for restoration and maintenance according to manufacturer specifications for the most common engines: Piaggio, Minarelli, Peugeot and Morini.
