Ignition for 50cc motorcycles

The ignition or alternator generates the spark that makes the engine run. Without it, starting and riding are not possible. Choosing the right ignition does not depend only on the model: it must deliver the spark at the right time and match the intended use. From original alternators to high-end racing ignitions, our range includes products from well-known brands such as Stage6, MVT, Malossi, Polini, Motoforce and many more.

Ignition components and their function

The ignition of a 50cc supermoto or enduro bike consists of several key components. In the event of a fault, usually only one part is affected. Once you identify and replace the defective component, the vehicle will run again. In our ignition category, you will find a wide selection of spare parts and accessories for maintenance, repair, or optimization/tuning.

  • Rotor (flywheel): Rotates with the engine and creates a magnetic field so that the stator can generate electricity.
  • Stator: Coil assembly that, together with the rotor, generates the current for ignition and battery charging.
  • Pick-up: Detects the engine position and sends the signal to the CDI so that ignition timing is correct.
  • CDI/ECU (control unit): Processes the signal and delivers high voltage to the ignition coil at the correct time.
  • Ignition coil: Converts the CDI voltage into high voltage for a strong ignition spark.
  • Spark plug cap and ignition cable: Carry the high voltage to the spark plug and prevent interference.
  • Spark plug: Produces the spark and ignites the mixture in the cylinder.
  • Voltage regulator: Converts AC to DC and stabilizes the voltage to protect electrical components and ensure proper battery charging.
  • Kill switch / emergency stop switch: Immediately interrupts the ignition and stops the engine.

Types of ignition for 50cc geared mopeds

The type of ignition influences the engine response. There are two main types: standard ignitions or OEM-quality replicas for reliable replacement, and racing ignitions for sharper response and higher performance.

→ Standard ignition (OEM)

Relatively heavy and designed for stock engines. It revs up more slowly and is not intended for very high RPM. However, it provides a stable spark for everyday use, a constant power supply for lighting and instruments, and is considered durable.

Recommendations : Motoforce, Standard Parts, original parts (OEM).

Note : The original CDI is often equipped with an RPM limiter. There are therefore unrestricted CDIs without limitation, which can also be useful for mildly tuned setups.

→ Internal rotor racing ignition

The rotor is lighter and allows faster revving. The setup is designed for high RPM, sometimes with a variable ignition curve. Some systems also provide 12V for lighting and instruments.

Even though the ignition consists of several components and affects performance, replacing individual parts is often enough to restore proper function.

We offer spark plugs, spark plug caps, cables, ignition coils, and unrestricted CDI units individually. These parts are available for many common models such as Derbi Euro 2 / 3, Rieju MRT, Beta RR, Sherco SM, AM6 and come from well-known manufacturers.

FAQ - frequently asked questions about ignitions

→ Does the entire ignition need to be replaced? Often that's not necessary; in most cases, replacing the CDI, ignition coil, or spark plug is sufficient.

→ Which ignition is the right one for me? OEM-style for everyday use. Racing or internal rotor for tuned engines and track use.

Practical tip

For everyday use, an original / OEM-style ignition is the safest choice. For racing or heavily tuned engines, an internal rotor ignition offers more performance. Proven brands help avoid failures.
