Inner rotor ignition: the ultimate racing ignition

Inner rotor ignitions are commonly used in engine tuning, especially on small two-stroke engines. This includes scooters, 50cc gear bikes, mopeds, and also some maxi scooters or 125cc motorcycles.

Racing ignitions are available for common engines such as Minarelli AM6, Derbi Euro 2 / Euro 3, Minarelli vertical / horizontal as well as Piaggio, and also for less common engines, particularly for vintage mopeds.

Advantages of an inner rotor ignition

The main advantage over an outer rotor ignition is the lower rotating mass. This allows small two-stroke engines to rev up faster and reach higher RPM more quickly. The result is more direct acceleration and easier access to the optimal power band.

Regardless of rotor type, a racing ignition generally delivers a stronger and more consistent spark than a stock ignition. The ignition timing is either optimized or adjustable.

Most systems are supplied with a matching CDI, with ignition curves adapted accordingly.

A range of high-end models is available, such as MVT Digital Direct and MVT Premium, Malossi MHR Team 2, Polini Evolution PVL, Italkit Selettra PVL and Curva, Bidalot Factory as well as the well-known Stage6 R/T.

With or without lighting

Although tuning ignitions are intended for racing use, some models still provide power for onboard electrics. This applies, for example, to MVT DD, Premium and Millenium, which provide a 12V supply. Malossi Power ignitions for classic mopeds also offer this function.

This makes it possible to use lighting and indicators, even though these ignitions are not approved for road use.

Note:

When choosing this type of ignition, it is recommended to also use a suitable racing spark plug and a new spark plug cap.

The carburetor should also be adjusted accordingly, for example with suitable jets.
