The chassis, the main component of a two-wheeler

The chassis is made up of the frame, suspension, wheels and everything else that supports the engine and connects it to the road. The condition and quality of chassis components have a direct effect on riding performance.

So it's important to maintain it, and to make any necessary modifications when you need more power, or for special uses such as racing.

Moped chassis: Key elements and tips

Original or racing shock absorbers

Most vintage mopeds feature a double shock absorber at the rear. The pair acts as a link between the frame and the swingarm to which the rear wheel is attached. It provides shock absorption and rider comfort. We're not talking here about the old cyclos that had no rear suspension at all!

As mopeds were produced with the aim of offering economical vehicles, the suspension remains relatively basic. As a result, the original shock absorbers are rather simplistic, generally devoid of adjustment. That's why sport or racing shocks are required for more dynamic riding. These shocks are adjustable to find the ideal compromise between comfort and firmness (adjustable preload, compression and rebound).

    Maintenance point of view:

    • An original moped shock absorber is generally never opened. It's not drained, but completely replaced when it leaks. This makes them relatively affordable.
    • A Racing shock absorber needs regular maintenance: regular oil changes, gas refills, checking of spring dimensions... The initial purchase cost is higher, but here, spare parts are available and affordable.

    FORK

    Located at the front of the vehicle, the fork connects the chassis to the front wheel. It provides shock absorption on the front axle. Most popular mopeds come with standard telescopic forks. The fork is generally not adjustable, so special components are required to improve damping.

    Maintenance :

    • A standard mob fork is virtually maintenance-free. You just have to check that everything's responding properly, and change the spinnaker seals if they leak. Some forks don't even have oil or an internal cartridge! Just a spring and some grease.
    • As with the racing shock absorber, the racing fork requires even more maintenance: regular oil changes, oil seals and friction rings in perfect condition, and occasional checks of spring ratings.

    Steering bearings

    Located on the fork crown, the steering bearings ensure correct handlebar rotation. They too need to be maintained (greased occasionally) and replaced if necessary, when the steering shows abnormal play or notches when turning the handlebars.
