Description

Stage6 R/T MK2 front shock absorber Piaggio Zip SP1 / SP2 / Vespa

Stage6 has once again made an effort and can proudly present the latest version of their high-end shock absorber for Piaggio Zip SP1 - SP2 and Vespa: Shock Absorber front Stage6 R/T MKII Piaggio Zip SP1 / SP2 / Vespa.

2nd generation of Stage6 R/T Racing shock

The predecessor model has been considered the ultimate reference in high-end suspension for race bikes for more than 10 years. Stage6 wanted to improve their product a bit more to satisfy even the most ambitious tuners and race pilots.

The Stage6 team worked with the best technicians and engineers, all of them with a lot of know-how and experience in racing and of course in all things Piaggio Zip. The Zip SP has two single (mono) shocks (this is the front one), and handling is very different from that of a motorcycle. This is mainly due to the chassis, the height of the seat and the asymmetrical engine block.

Many many runs on the test bench and, above all, extensive live use on the race track allowed Stage6 to develop a shock absorber that can be optimally adapted to riding style and all potential applications to create a precise, responsive suspension that offers optimum grip even under the most extreme conditions.

Features Stage6 R/T front shock

The Stage6 R/T MKII shock absorber, version 2020, is a gas charged twin-tube coil over shock absorber with external reservoir, the type that is preferred for high-end tuning. To adapt the suspension to personal style, use and track conditions, the shock absorber has the following settings:

  • Preload (at spring base)
  • Compression (orange wheel)
  • Rebound (black knob)

The shock absorber can be perfectly adjusted to the weight of the driver and compression and rebound can be controlled with utmost precision. Adjustment is optimized, i.e. the setting of a single "click" on the wheel can be noticed immediately.

You can also change the height of the front in two ways:

  • with the original Piaggio mount for Zip SP1 or SP2 - higher front axle
  • with the Stage6 adapter S6-146140ET03 (see recommendations) - lower front axle

Please note that this MKII shock absorber will only fit on a Stage6 type caliper bracket designed for our 4 piston calipers (reference: S6-140063). Not suitable with the original caliper!

Various springs in different degrees of hardness offer even more adjustment options, you can buy them as spare parts.
Please do not forget to order a shock absorber rubber buffer (OE-PIA216209) to ensure best results.

Notes and Safety

Shock Absorbers

Basic Function

Whether motocross, scooter, moped, or motorcycle, shock absorbers have a very simple and fundamental function: they dampen impacts and vibrations to make riding more comfortable and safe. Without shock absorbers, it would be impossible to reach higher speeds, as the wheels would barely maintain contact with the ground.

Since shock absorbers ensure contact with the road and are therefore one of the main safety features of a vehicle, they must be serviced regularly and always be in perfect working condition.

How do I recognize a defective shock absorber?

A shock absorber must absorb impacts, but it must not behave only like a spring, otherwise you'd have a “catapult effect”.

If the shock absorber rebounds too quickly after being compressed, sticks, squeaks, or shows oil residue (oil leak), it must be repaired or replaced immediately.

For motocross bikes, where shock absorbers are technically complex and correspondingly expensive, there are repair kits. However, you need a certain level of technical know-how and special tools to carry out these repairs.
For 50cc scooters, mopeds, and gear bikes, complete shock absorbers are more commonly available, allowing full replacement.

OEM, Adjustable, Racing

Gas pressure or hydraulic, simple shock units or complex systems – there are many different types of shock absorbers.
An important factor is suspension travel, which determines how intensively the vehicle can be used. Depending on the model, there are also various adjustment options.
There are simple models, such as most stock shocks on scooters. Shock absorbers can also feature various adjustment options that allow the handling to be adapted to the rider, purpose, and conditions. These include shock absorbers with adjustable spring preload, high/low shock absorbers with adjustable compression damping for low and high speeds, and shock absorbers with adjustable rebound damping found on motocross bikes.
Racing shock absorbers are the most advanced models; they include all the adjustment options mentioned above, are made from high-quality materials, and often feature special surface finishes (e.g. the popular “Kashima coating”).

How to find the right shock absorber?

In general, most shock absorbers for 50cc scooters are very similar and have a 20 mm wide lower mount and a 10 mm “eye” at the top. Scooters with Piaggio engines have a 34 mm wide lower mount and a threaded pin at the top. There are, of course, exceptions.

The length of the shock absorber can be adjusted by 2–3 cm to modify seat height or handling according to personal preference. A longer shock absorber provides slightly sportier handling.
