Malossi MHR Team 2 CVT Piaggio

Tuning CVT from the Malossi's racing R&D: Variator Malossi MHR Team 2 Aluminium Piaggio ZIP / NRG for Piaggio and Aprilia (with Piaggio engine), suitable for Malossi C-One, Polini PRE and TPR crankcases.

Malossi's engineers have made every effort to eliminate the problems typically found in tuning CVTs: seizing of the variator sleeve, belt slip, inefficient power transmission to the wheel, deformation of relevant components, non-guaranteed smooth and stable transmission. 

Performance Benefozs Malossi CVT

This is a self-lubricating CVT. The components sitting on the sleeve, or bush, must be able to slide smoothly and frictionless at all times, any deformation would be a major disadvantage at this point. This is why Malossi uses hardened steel bushes, the bushes are ground inside and outside so the surfaces offer even less resistance. The grease inside the bushing is evenly distributed via 2 oil seals. All this results in minimum friction and therefore efficient power transmission to the rear wheel and maximum power development.

The 22mm variator sleeve also has small perforations through which the grease can pass from the inside to the outside to ensure optimal lubrication. This optimal lubricating film also allows for the tolerances in designing the other components to be further reduced, thus improving the precision and overall design.

The movable pulley has a diameter of 99.5 mm and is cast from a special aluminium alloy. The contact surface between pulley and V-belt was machined with a diamond tool to ensure a stable friction coefficient so that the belt does not slip, but also does not wear too quickly.

Notes and Safety

Modern scooters are equipped with a continuously variable transmission, the so-called CVT, also called variator.

CVT Parts:

  • Front pulley, movable. It contains the variator weights and has a special shape with an inclined surface to allow the V-belt to move freely up and down.
  • Ramp plate: Holds the weights in place.
  • Variator sleeve: Serves as a bearing for the variator, which moves axially back and forth, i.e., opens and closes.
  • CVT roller weights: Adjustment weights that play a critical role in function and performance.

original, Sport and Oversize CVTs

  • Original: Original or OEM quality CVTs are equipped with a restrictor to limit the speed to 45km/h. There are riders who remove the restrictor to derestrict their scooter and unleash the full performance without restrictions.
  • Sport: Sport CVTs are lighter than the original and are characterized by special angles and a special coating, which increases the top speed, but especially acceleration.
  • Oversize: Based on the same principle as the Sport CVT, but has larger dimensions. With an oversize / overrange vario, the performance of the scooter can be increased even further.

You should also always replace the V-belt when replacing the CVT or go for a complete CVT kit.
