Reed valve

The reed valve is a component found only on 2-stroke engines. It controls cylinder filling and extends the usable RPM range of the engine. Without a reed valve, engines would be weaker at low RPM and would deliver power much more abruptly.

Well-known brands such as Moto Tassinari, Stage6, Italkit, Polini, or Malossi offer high-quality reed valves for the most common models.

Performance improvement via reed valve

A reed valve can improve performance across the entire RPM range, as the cylinder is filled more efficiently and a higher flow rate is possible.

The material and thickness of the reed petals (steel, fiberglass, carbon, epoxy composite) also influence behavior at low or high RPM. As a general rule:

  • Thicker = stiffer = less torque, but possible gains at high RPM
  • Thinner = more flexible = better acceleration, but losses at high RPM

It is recommended to test different options and select the setup that best suits the vehicle.

Reed valve spacers are also available, allowing the crankcase volume to be increased.

Choosing the right reed valve

When setting up an engine, especially on 50cc scooters and gear bikes, the reed valve should match the cylinder kit. The more powerful the cylinder, the greater the flow capacity required from the reed valve.

Many manufacturers offer so-called “big valve” kits for tuned scooters such as Yamaha Aerox or Piaggio Zip, where the original reed valve is very small.

On geared motorbikes with Minarelli AM6 or Derbi engines, installing a larger reed valve often requires modification of the crankcase. Please take this into account.

In the motocross segment, Moto Tassinari offers V-Force reed valves, which are easy to install and provide improved flow. The thickness of the reed blades is already optimized for many common models (KTM SX, Yamaha YZ, Honda CR, etc.).

To simplify installation, complete intake kits are also available, including intake manifold, reed valve, and additional components.

Replacement reed petals for cost-effective repair

The reed valve can be replaced entirely, but this is often not necessary. The reed petals, or reed blades, move very quickly and are subject to high loads. They should be replaced regularly when they are no longer sealing properly.

A wide range of reed petals made of carbon, fiberglass, or metal is available.

There are also carbon reed sheets, allowing you to cut reed petals to a desired size, for example for less common models.
