Moped exhausts - Overview

Vintage mopeds have been making a strong comeback. In our shop, you’ll find exhaust systems for legendary models like Zündapp, Simson, Hercules, Kreidler, or Puch, as well as French mopeds like Peugeot 103 and MBK 51, and Italian classics such as Piaggio Ciao and Si. Whether you want to preserve the original look and sound or turn your moped into a more sporty ride, there are both street-legal options and racing exhausts for every project.

On a classic moped, the exhaust is far more than just an attachment: it defines the character and unlocks the full potential of the engine. Even with a standard engine, carburetor, and variator, an expansion exhaust noticeably changes the riding experience: it improves gas flow, increases low-end torque, and gives your vintage moped a distinctly more dynamic character.

Why change the exhaust on a classic moped?

  • Derestriction: The original exhaust usually limits speed to 45 km/h or even 25 km/h.
  • More power: The shape and volume of the exhaust directly affect torque and throttle response.
  • Optimum gas flow: Design and dimensions have a direct impact on engine performance.
  • Sound: Choose between homologated and quiet exhaust for the road or a derestricted one for use on the race track.
  • Look: Materials, colors, finishes and designs for customization.

Exhaust Types for vintage mopeds:

⇒ Original / OEM quality: Preserve the classic look, run quietly, and are ideal for restorations or everyday use. No performance gain, but authentic style and high reliability. Recommended brands: Motoforce, Sito, Leovince, Giannelli Original Power, Proma. Street-legal.

⇒ Sport: Noticeably better throttle response and more torque in low and mid RPMs. Sportier sound and design, usually painted or chrome. Balanced between daily usability and performance. Examples: Yasuni, Tecnigas Next-R, Giannelli Fire, Proma Circuit, Doppler ER1. Street-legal depending on model.

⇒ Racing: Designed for high-performance cylinders, optimized for high RPMs and competition use. Maximum performance, louder, and intended for track use only. Examples: Stage6 Streetrace, Malossi Too Bad / VT, MVT S-Race / SC, Polini Sport. Not street-legal.

Note on street legality: Only exhausts with a homologation number or engraved approval are allowed on public roads. All others are for racing use only.

Complete kits: Exhaust + cylinder + carburetor

The exhaust always works in harmony with the cylinder and intake. When changing the exhaust, the carburetor usually needs to be adjusted as well. Simply installing a new exhaust is rarely enough to increase power.

Recommended carburetors by exhaust type:

  • Original 50cc: Standard carburetor (Gurtner, Dellorto SHA 12/12, Bing, etc.).
  • Sport: Dellorto SHA 15/15, PHBG 17.5.
  • Racing: Dellorto PHBG 19 or PWK conversion.

Tip: When fitting a new exhaust, you should start with a larger main jet and gradually reduce it until the ideal setting is achieved. The spark plug serves as an indicator: tan = perfect tuning.

Care and maintenance of moped exhausts

Regular maintenance is crucial for performance and longevity. Check mounts and gaskets regularly and remove deposits. Inspect the silencer and replace packing wool if the exhaust gets louder or loses power. A thorough cleaning every few thousand kilometers is recommended depending on usage. For surface protection and corrosion prevention, use heat-resistant paint, clear coat, or oil.

FAQ - common questions about moped exhausts

→ How do you tune the carburetor after changing the exhaust?

After installing a sports or racing exhaust, the main jet should be increased by 5-15 %. Spark plug color: Tan = optimal, white = jet too small, black = jet too large.

→ Can a used exhaust be restored?

Yes. With thorough cleaning, stripping, and high-temperature paint or chrome, the original look can often be restored. Packing wool and small cracks can also be repaired. This is particularly worthwhile for collector's items.

→ Do you have to reinforce other parts when fittinh a racing exhaust?

Yes, especially with 70cc cylinders, the variator, V-belt and crankshaft should be reinforced in order to reliably handle the full engine power.
