Ignition systems for vintage mopeds

The ignition produces the spark that brings any internal combustion engine to life. Choosing the right setup is not just a simple maintenance task: it is the guarantee of a reliable start, stable lighting, correct charging, and optimal engine response. From original systems (electronic or points-based) to racing ignitions, you will find parts here from renowned brands such as MVT, Italkit, Malossi, Polini, or PVL. Ignition components and their function

The ignition system consists of a few essential elements. In the event of a breakdown, it is usually a single defective component. Identifying and replacing it gets the vehicle back in working order. Rotor (flywheel): Rotating with the engine, it creates the magnetic field that allows the stator to produce electricity.
Stator: A set of fixed coils that, combined with the rotor, generates the current necessary for ignition and potential battery recharging.
Pulse sensor (pick-up): Found on electronic CDI systems, it detects the crankshaft position and sends the signal to trigger the spark. Note: points-based systems do not use one.
CDI: Electronic module that processes the pulse signal and sends a high-voltage discharge to the coil. Available in AC or DC versions, with fixed, variable, or programmable advance.
Contact breaker (points): Mechanical switch used in traditional systems. It opens and closes the primary circuit to produce the spark. Requires a quality capacitor and periodic adjustment or replacement.
Ignition coil: Amplifies the CDI signal to provide a powerful and crisp spark.
Spark plug cap and lead: Carry the high voltage from the coil to the spark plug.
Spark plug: Key element of the ignition: it ignites the air/fuel mixture and starts the engine.
Regulator (AC) / Regulator-rectifier (DC): In alternating current lighting circuits, a regulator limits the voltage to protect the bulbs. When direct current is required (battery, LED, USB port), the regulator/rectifier converts and stabilizes the output to approximately 12V DC. Essential for reliable 12V conversions.
Kill switch: Immediately interrupts the current: an essential safety element on any machine.

Comparison: main types of ignition for classic mopeds

→ Points-based / Traditional mechanical ignition

Features:

Contact breaker (points) and capacitor.
Typical of original restorations.
Often associated with a low-power 6V stator.

Advantages:

Disadvantages: Regularly goes out of adjustment. The advance is less precise than an electronic CDI.

Some internal rotor kits offer a regulated 12V lighting output, combining track performance with road use. Available power generally varies between 30 and 80W. Some models allow voltage stabilization via a small battery or a capacitor.

Excellent choices: MVT Premium / DD and Malossi Power for many classic mopeds. Always check wiring compatibility and exact power output.

Original vs. tuning ignition on mopeds

Original ignition: prioritizes reliability, longevity, and simplicity; ideal for daily use and faithful restorations.
Tuning / racing ignition: intended for modified engines; programmable CDI, variable advance, and lightened rotor for better response and increased performance at high RPM.

Many old 50cc engines run on 6 Volts with limited electrical power. Switching to 12 Volts requires a compatible stator and a suitable regulator (AC) or regulator/rectifier (DC), as well as a matching CDI/coil. It is also necessary to replace the bulbs, horn, and flasher unit (as well as any voltage-sensitive accessories). DC-CDI systems benefit from a small battery. A high-capacity capacitor can replace the battery but provides less stable lighting at idle.

Warning: Timing and the advance curve significantly influence the power and temperature of a small 2-stroke engine. Too much advance increases the risk of overheating and knocking, while excessive retard degrades low-end torque and starting. Always follow the manufacturer's specifications and check with a strobe light if the CDI has variable advance.

Not necessarily. Often, changing the CDI, coil, cap, or spark plug is enough. Proceed by elimination before replacing the complete assembly.

For daily reliability and faithful restoration, go for original parts (points or OEM CDI). For a tuned engine or track use, choose an internal rotor system with variable or programmable CDI. If road lighting is required, select a kit offering a regulated 12V output.

→ If I switch from 6V to 12V, what else do I need to change?
